{"id":5437,"date":"2024-08-31T09:49:06","date_gmt":"2024-08-31T08:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/?p=5437"},"modified":"2025-01-19T14:21:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T14:21:46","slug":"energy-group-meeting-notes-29-08-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/index.php\/2024\/08\/31\/energy-group-meeting-notes-29-08-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy group meeting notes (29.08.24)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here is what we covered at this meeting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We looked at the offer and claim from two examples <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysavingdevon.org.uk\/improving-your-home-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community based<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/upgrades.heatgeek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commercial<\/a>. Both examples use EPC data to recommend changes to a property including having a HP installed. Both allow you to correct the EPC findings. What is interesting is the claimed HP saving in terms of money and ghg emissions. Even installers like HeatGeek, who were recently featured in the national press, appear to oversell their products. Claiming a guaranteed \u2018efficiency\u2019 of 380% and zero operational ghg emissions is disappointing, despite the small print clarifications. Why not try the two approaches for your property and compare the advice. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysavingdevon.org.uk\/improving-your-home-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Energy Savin<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysavingdevon.org.uk\/improving-your-home-2\/\">g Devon<\/a> is the source ACT recommends for information on all aspects of building retrofit, links to finding installers are also covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We looked at the article in the latest CAT newsletter, see \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/billyaikencat\/docs\/clean_slate_132cont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What\u2019s Holding Back HPs?<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/billyaikencat\/docs\/clean_slate_132cont\">\u201d<\/a>. In essence it shows the discrepancy between claimed efficiency as specified by installers using government methodology and measure real-world performance of 435 ASHP in 2022 and 1.431 ASHP installed in the previous 5 years. I gave other references to similar UK and European data at <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/newsite\/page.php\/post\/energy-group-notes-04-07-24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our meeting in July<\/a> when we discussed the dangerous \u2018fabric fifth\u2019 messaging being promoted by some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note for example the CAT articles reference to average ASHP efficiency quoted is 360% compared to the average measured efficiency of 270% for those systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so much misinformation and mis selling it\u2019s useful to be better informed. Please refer to our recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/teignenergycommunities.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TECs-Heatpumps-v1.0.pdf\">guide on HP<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/teignenergycommunities.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/TECs-Heatpumps-v1.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">s<\/a>, it\u2019s aimed at anyone with little or plenty of heating system experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ACT\u2019s representation at the local plan examination on Climate Change policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACT will be attending the examination of the section on Climate Change on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> September. We have a team of 3 preparing for this with a focus on the submitted representation. Let me know if you would like to comment or find out more. It includes information on what existing plumbing is suitable for conversion to HPs, a question from one of the members attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transport, what are our options to minimise ghg emissions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not having discussed transport for a while, this was a thought-provoking question on where people would look if they asked the question \u201cwhat can I do to reduce my greenhouse gas emissions from transport?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One obvious choice is the internet. Googling it gives a reasonable quick list of 8 actions, surprisingly from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pore\/learn\/nature\/climatechange_action_transportation.htm\">U<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pore\/learn\/nature\/climatechange_action_transportation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S national park authority<\/a>. Using AI (<a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/c\/7f9035cf-9bb3-4544-93df-c5af7dd62b4e\">C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/c\/7f9035cf-9bb3-4544-93df-c5af7dd62b4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hat GPT<\/a>) is less reasonable, not the best priorities\/advice (e.g. hybrids). ACT has made a list of actions available via the <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/newsite\/page.php\/page\/carbon-calculator?2024-08-08T13:55:20+00:00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CFT<\/a>, the thinking behind this is to encourage people to consider their circumstances first (i.e. footprint and target reductions) before deciding on the most appropriate\/effective action.
