These two represent more detailed calculators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.resurgence.org\/resources\/carbon-calculator.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Resurgence &amp; Ecologist &#8211; carbon dioxide calculator<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonfootprint.com\/calculator.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Carbon Footprint Ltd &#8211; Carbon calculator<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is a food only calculator:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-46459714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">BBC &#8211; Climate change food calculator<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to do a personalised assessment of your energy related carbon footprint Teign Energy Communities have developed an <a href=\"http:\/\/teignenergycommunities.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/TECs-Energy-Assesment-Introduction-v1.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">e-pack<\/a> which includes tools for measuring your building energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"q3A\">Which electricity suppliers offer genuinely green tariffs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/news\/2019\/09\/how-green-is-your-energy-tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\">a recent report<\/a> in Which? magazine \u201csome companies do buy directly from generators, or build wind or solar farms, but many don\u2019t. And it can cost suppliers as little as \u00a31.55 per year to say that your year\u2019s electricity supply is renewable. Although many tariffs made renewable claims, just four companies told us that they own renewable generation (solar or wind farms, for example). Six others have parent companies which do.\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/news\/2019\/09\/how-green-is-your-energy-tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"q3\"> What are the carbon emissions for Teignbridge at present and how might these be improved? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The government publishes greenhouse gas (GHG) emission statistics at local authority level in June roughly 18 months after the end of the year in question. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These statistics can be downloaded from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/data.gov.uk\/dataset\/723c243d-2f1a-4d27-8b61-cdb93e5b10ff\/emissions-of-carbon-dioxide-for-local-authority-areas\" target=\"_blank\">data.gov.uk<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest available figures are for 2017 when Teignbridge emitted a total of 772.7 kilotonnes CO2 equivalent.  This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Source<\/td><td>kt CO2e<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Negative emissions due to Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF)<\/td><td>-40.5        <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Road and Rail Transport<\/td><td>417<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Domestic energy use<\/td><td>183.1<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Industrial and Commercial energy use<\/td><td>213.1<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures do not include emissions due to goods bought in Teignbridge that are produced elsewhere, but does include emissions due to production in Teignbridge that is exported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While emissions have fallen since 2005, most of this reduction has been achieved by improving emissions from electricity generation by reduced use of coal and increasing use of renewables. The following graph illustrates this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"481\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image.png 481w, https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Transport represents about 50% of energy related emissions and is probably the easiest area to achieve reductions by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Encouraging walking or cycling and providing safe routes.<\/li><li>Encouraging the use of public transport, including frequent low cost bus and train services.<\/li><li>Reducing speed limits to reduce emissions.<\/li><li>Car free and emission control zones.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Friends of the Earth has summarised these statistics and suggests areas for improvement on its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/takeclimateaction.uk\/climate-action\/how-climate-friendly-your-area-enter-your-postcode-see-results-your-community\" target=\"_blank\">CLIMATE ACTION<\/a> site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teignbridge District Council can already ensure that legal requirements are enforced for Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs). For more see: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/teignenergycommunities.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ACT-Buit-Env-Actions-v1.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">What Teignbridge District Council can already do<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have done detailed analysis of an extreme scenario where all domestic energy and transport is electrified with 100% zero carbon energy, which demonstrates that energy efficiency improvements are needed from all buildings and reduction in private transport is needed to achieve this. For further details see: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/teignenergycommunities.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/TECs-Zero-Carbon-v0.11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Adjusting Energy for Zero Carbon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at the Tyndall Centre at Manchester University have analysed the carbon budgets in the Paris Climate Change Agreement and have concluded that Teignbridge needs to reduce its emissions by 14.4% per year to meet its share of GHG emissions reduction.
