Built Environment group is all about taking meaningful actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, doing our bit to tackle climate change. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The working group meets regularly every four weeks (by Zoom or in person).&nbsp; We have combined these meetings with those of the <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/newsite\/page.html?slug=transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Transport group<\/strong><\/a>. Please contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/newsite\/contact.html?dest=Energy and Built Environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>group coordinator<\/strong><\/a> if you would like to join us.&nbsp; Everyone is welcome to ask questions, discuss topics, plan or implement the actions needed to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/newsite\/page.php\/page\/vision-mission-and-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>our purpose<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to cooperate with others, nationally, regionally and locally.&nbsp; Our focus, however, will be on working locally within Teignbridge.&nbsp; Not only do we need to learn\/share best practice, but we also need to bring our community with us if we are to be successful in delivering a sea-change in attitudes and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy and Built Environment covers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Housing and buildings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New development and existing stock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infrastructure, including all those associated with transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy services and utilities, including energy generation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We have developed a number of tools and gathered data to help everyone understand and tackle their Carbon emissions. This starts with us as individuals and extends to households and public\/private organisations, or can cover a particular geography\/sector within Teignbridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several activities the working group undertakes, including providing data\/analysis and support to anyone that asks.&nbsp;<mark style=\"background-color:#9DFF20\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Below are our current areas of focus and links to more information\/support<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use the terms Carbon and Green House Gas (<strong>GHG<\/strong>) emissions interchangeably to refer to all gases that contribute to atmospheric warming.&nbsp; These are usually measured in terms of weight of CO2 equivalent, e.g. kg CO2e or t CO2e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Energy &amp; Carbon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 75% of GHG emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s stated net zero Carbon ambitions and other related policies are of course welcome.&nbsp; We do not, however, think these are coherent or well thought through at this stage.&nbsp; In particular, we do not think there is an energy or Carbon strategy to get us to net zero, even by as late as 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-1.png 275w, https:\/\/backup.act.stringerhj.co.uk\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/image-1-235x300.png 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A more coherent approach to decarbonising everything would be to follow one of the widely accepted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=energy+hierarchy&amp;client=firefox-b-d&amp;tbm=isch&amp;source=iu&amp;ictx=1&amp;fir=KhP9xMoixSDZ1M%252C7bpjkQCQk8sccM%252C_&amp;vet=1&amp;usg=AI4_-kR159ske0og7eTqPTK3ranUL66JIQ&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjvtayAqZbsAhVdVRUIHW1PCNIQ_h0wAXoECAoQBA&amp;biw=1920&amp;bih=910#imgrc=TLKbrjc6E17yeM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Energy Hierarchies<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;These hierarchies can differ slightly in their steps, but all <mark style=\"background-color:#9DFF20\" class=\"has-inline-color\">start with reducing energy consumption as the most important and effective<\/mark>. Technological solutions on their own, whether in improved efficiencies or more renewables, will neither reduce GHG emissions enough nor can they do it quickly enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, we will need the technological solutions to complete the task.&nbsp; Even if we were to make significant inroads into reducing our energy consumption, it would be impossible to reduce this to zero.&nbsp; Therefore, we need technological solutions to make sure the remaining energy we require has low enough GHG emission that the natural environment is able to absorb (sequester).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With current trends, we will have emitted enough GHG within 5 years to exceed the Paris Accord\u2019s limits.&nbsp; To stay close to the 1.5<sup>O<\/sup>C temperature rise limit, we will need to get to net zero GHG emissions by 2030.&nbsp; See our 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/lookup_document.php\/ACT\/ACT-Comments-on-TDC-Local-Plan-Review-Oct19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>report<\/strong><\/a> to the council and the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/actionclimateteignbridge.org\/lookup_document.php\/ACT\/ACT-TP-Pack-Emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>explanation<\/strong><\/a> of what is causing the climate transformation, what it&#8217;s consequences are likely to be and what needs to happen to mitigate this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of conflicting reports on the next new technology that will \u2018solve the problem\u2019.&nbsp;We do not think there is a \u2018silver bullet\u2019.&nbsp;We also think there is much confusion between generating low-Carbon energy and how we use energy in general.&nbsp;For example, both electric vehicles and heat pumps may be sold as \u2018green\u2019 or \u2018low carbon\u2019, but the energy needed to power them has to come from somewhere.&nbsp; Some would say, we\u2019ll just have more Renewables.&nbsp; It\u2019s of course not that simple. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that whole housing retrofit will be a critical area to address.&nbsp; While there have been several government schemes, including the most recent \u00a35,000-\u00a310,000 green homes grant initiative, the local market and supply chain are not sufficiently developed to deliver quality retrofits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have been working with Devon County Council and Community
